04. The UTM_Source & UTM_Medium Tag Library

4 min read

Thank you for your time to read this tutorial. Before we proceed, we would like to recommend that you first look at these two blogs that explain what utm_medium and utm_source really are and how they need to fit into your reporting strategy for your project to be a success:

1. A Brief Video Tutorial

Here is a quick 4-minute tutorial showing you how CampaignTrackly helps you manage your UTM_medium and UTM_source tags by combining them in one dynamic library:

NOTE: The Settings>UTM_Channels page contains both UTM_source and UTM_channel tags as a time-saving feature.

Both tags are mandatory and mostly used by Google Analytics customers. However some customers also use these UTM codes with Adobe Analytics. If you are an Adobe user, please contact us at support@campaigntrackly.com so we can customize these settings for you and meet your goals.

1. Why we group together UTM_source and UTM_channel tags

Because they are both mandatory and they always go together. To make it easier to select and use tags in a scalable way it is simpler to always set them up together.

2. Our app comes pre-populated with  20+  UTM Source and Medium values

We have added these just to get you started with CampaignTrackly without downtime. You can always delete all of them and import your own library in seconds.

  • In this tab,  you can manage and grow your source and medium tag library reliably.
  • You can add or delete your channel tags at any time.
  • At this moment in time, you cannot edit an already existing channel for governance reasons, but you can delete it in one easy step and replace it with a new one.
  • You or team members can “favorite” most frequently channels, so they always appear at the top of your tagging dashboard tag list.
  • You can hide, bulk-import or bulk-export your tags or add comments/instructions for each tag, if desired.

3. BULK-upload of Multiple UTM Tags in One GO from your existing spreadsheet

  • For those of you who are currently using a spreadsheet for tagging, in the animated gif below we show you how to:
    • Copy your current medium and source classifications from your Excel/Google sheet
    • Paste them into a new Excel Spreadsheet
    • Save as .csv in your Downloads folder
    • Go to CampaignTrackly Settings
    • Upload and save into your dynamic tag library in CampaignTrackly’s Settings, so they are available for easy future use.

4. BULK-upload your tag classifications if you do not have a current spreadsheet

  • If you already have established tagging conventions in place but they sit in various places and files, please follow this guide to see how you can easily organize and upload all your existing tags in our tagging engine. Click to get the sample UTM Upload template files here.
  • All currently active channel tags will appear in your Campaign tagging dashboard immediately after being uploaded. To check your tags have been populated into your tagging dashboard successfully, please click the  “Add campaign” button on the Campaigns page of CampaignTrackly.

5. Create your tag library in CampaignTrackly from scratch

  • If you are not sure how to set up your channels, drop us a line, contact us via the chat tool (available to you within the following EST work hours: 8am – 6pm) or read more in our free UTM parameters guide.
  • For those of you who do not have any tagging classifications in place, we recommend that you use the examples we have pre-populated for you and contact your stakeholders to understand what channels they will be using for their campaigns.
  • Then you can create and name all channels in an excel spreadsheet.  Don’t worry if you did not get them all. You can always add more any time you want.
    • please open a new Excel spreadsheet, create three columns (no heading necessary) and populate your Title, UTM Source and its UTM Medium.
    • Save as a .csv file and head over to CampaignTrackly.
    • Use the Import Channel Tabs button to upload into our platform with a few quick clicks.

6. Dynamic Tagging Setup

If you have used a dynamic Excel spreadsheet until now and would like to do the same using our platform, watch this video that shows you how you can set up your tags using Campaign Templates.

This concludes our UTM_Channels tag tutorial. Please proceed to the next page to continue the onboarding process.
